When I was growing up, there was a toy store in the city near where I lived. It was much better than KB Toys, but not as big as Toys R Us (which at the time hadn’t came to our area.)
The toy store itself was fun. They had a lot of toys in the store that you could actually play with. Eventually they merged with the Schwinn store and had more bikes than any kid could imagine.
But the thing I remember the most about the store was is mascot. Thorny the Monkey. He sat outside the door above the sign on a bicycle that made it appear he was peddling. I remember waving to this fake monkey when we went into the store. I eventually outgrew him, but by the time I was a teenager, he wasn’t there much. I think between the ages of 12 and 16 he was stolen and found in a weird spot at least 20 times. I don’t know if they ever caught who was doing it, or how they got him off that bicycle, but he was suddenly fun again. It was like a game guessing where this two foot tall monkey would be found.
